LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting has become increasingly popular in pigeon lofts due to its energy efficiency, long lifespan, and customizable light spectrum. LED lights produce less heat, making them safe and suitable for use in enclosed loft spaces. Additionally, LED lights can be adjusted to mimic natural daylight or adjusted to specific wavelengths to influence bird behavior.
Fluorescent lights are another common choice for pigeon loft lighting. They provide a good light output and are relatively energy-efficient. However, fluorescent lights can generate more heat compared to LED lights, so proper ventilation and cooling are essential to prevent overheating in the loft.
Incandescent bulbs are the traditional lighting option that emits a warm, yellowish light. While they can be used in pigeon lofts, they are less energy-efficient and have a shorter lifespan compared to LED and fluorescent lights. Incandescent bulbs also produce more heat, so caution must be taken to prevent excessive heat buildup.
The lighting intensity and duration in the pigeon loft should be adjusted according to the specific needs of the pigeons. Factors such as age, breeding season, and racing schedule influence the lighting requirements. Here are some considerations:
During the breeding season, it may be necessary to simulate longer daylight hours to encourage breeding behavior. This can be achieved by gradually increasing the duration of daylight using artificial lighting, mimicking the natural lengthening of days as spring approaches. It is important to monitor the birds’ response and adjust the lighting accordingly.
Prior to races, pigeons can benefit from increased lighting duration to ensure they are alert and active during training and competitions. 12-16 hours of light exposure per day is generally recommended during the racing season to keep the pigeons in optimal condition.
Providing access to natural daylight is also beneficial for pigeons. Natural light contains a full spectrum of wavelengths that cannot be fully replicated by artificial lighting alone. Ideally, loft design should incorporate windows or skylights to allow pigeons to receive natural light during the day.
In conclusion, pigeon loft lighting is essential for regulating sleep patterns, promoting breeding behavior, and ensuring the overall well-being of racing pigeons. LED lights are a popular choice due to their energy efficiency and customizable light spectrum. Lighting intensity and duration should be adjusted according to the specific needs of the pigeons, considering factors such as age, breeding season, and racing schedule. By providing the right lighting conditions, pigeon fanciers can create an optimal environment for their birds to thrive.
Dear Don,
Just sending a gift for my appreciation for getting such nice Sion birds from you. When I get some youngsters from them, I will send you some photos. I am still planning on purchase another hen and cock. Have a good breeding season with your birds.
Received birds this morning here in Missouri. They are safe and both beautiful.
Beautiful female pigeon. Lovely mix of colors, fether quality and great posture. I figured her picture wasn't the best pose. The male is impressive and very masculine looking and I'm happy to say they are calm and get along very well together. Thanks again they are gorgeous....

The Alexander Hansenne is indeed a remarkable Racing Pigeon Strain. Dr Willaim Anderson in his book "The Sport of Racing Pigeons" 1947 writes extensively about this outstanding Fancier. I luck to have an original copy of the book. Need i say i myself have of the Bronze chequers in my stock loft Well wishes to you
