The Molting Sequence

Molting is an annual, energy-intensive process where pigeons shed old, worn-out feathers and grow new ones. Triggered by decreasing daylight, it typically lasts 8 to 12 weeks. Because growing keratin feathers increases metabolic demand by 20–30%, birds require a high-protein diet, rest, and minimal stress. 

The annual complete molt follows a strict, biologically programmed pattern to ensure the bird is never left flightless. 

  • Body Feathers: The process begins in late summer or early fall with small body feathers around the neck and chest, gradually spreading to the back and abdomen. 

  • Flight Feathers: Wing and tail feathers molt sequentially. On the wings, primaries molt from the innermost feather outward. Secondaries molt from the outside inward. Tail feathers are replaced simultaneously in the center, fanning outward.

Beautiful female pigeon.  Lovely mix of colors, fether quality and great posture.  I figured her picture wasn't the best pose.  The male is impressive and very masculine looking and I'm happy to say they are calm and get along very well together.  Thanks again they are gorgeous....

Hi Don, birds are adapting well.  I like their presentaion & calmness.  Looks like they will fit in with my birds.  I see what you mean about the BB.  We'll see how he produces.  Might b a genetic thing & go away when crossed with and unrelated hen.
