South German Shield Pigeon Characteristics & Uses

The South German Shield pigeon is a breed of domestic fancy pigeon. As the name suggests, the breed is from Germany and was developed over many years of selective breeding.

The breed along with other varieties of domesticated pigeon breeds, all are descendants from the rock pigeon.

South German Shield Pigeon Appearance

South German Shield pigeon is a German Toy pigeon. It is a small sized breed and is closely related to the Double-Crested Shield. Entire body of these birds is white, except for the wings.

Their wings can be of different color. Main colors of their wings are black, blue, red and yellow. But black is the most common color.

They are mainly plain-headed, but some birds may occasionally are shell-crested. And the birds are actually clean-legged.

As a small sized breed, average mature body weight of the South German Shield pigeon breed is slightly under 360 grams.

Uses

The South German Shield pigeon is mainly raised for ornamental purpose.
