Description of the Hansennes

In 1896 Hansenne purchased the whole collection of a fancier who possessed a reputably good team of birds.  After examination of all the subjects of this loft, he kept only the champion and suppressed the remainder.  Later on again  Hansenne bought out a successful fancier from when he selected a Blue cock again killing the remainder.  This was the means which Hansenne founded a family of pigeons which has probably never surpassed.

Around the year 1890, Hansenne introduced a cross of Antwerp blood through a p, urchase at Vekeman's sale.  That cross proved useful, as the celebrated "Nouan" which was purchased by M. Pirlot of Liege,  for fifteen hundred francs, a record strong had the family characteristics become that the Antwerp cross did not change Hansenne's type in the last degree.

I myself have been a pigeon fancier for over 45 years and have yet seen a family of pigeons that I would put in front of the Hansennes.  They were medium in size and length, with a quality of feather unforgettable.  Another strong feature with them was they were partridge breasted birds, and because of that they always handled an ounce or two heavier than they looked.  To get the best out of them, they had to given plenty of work.  They are generally described as thick skull birds.  It's better to say they are short faced with a broad skull.  With record to eye color, about 25 percent would be pearl eyed, and 75 percent would have a bright orange ring around the pupil.  But, the majority of them had a deep maroon coloring in the outer iris.
