Cannot Guarantee Sex of Homing Pigeons

Although we try we cannot guarantee 100% the sex of all our homing pigeons.  We do our best when they are young birds to be as accuarate as possible when sexing them.  We apologize if occasionally we may get the sex wrong.

No, you cannot guarantee the sex of a pigeon simply by observing it. Because pigeons are monomorphic (males and females look the same), the only 100% reliable ways to determine sex are DNA testing or waiting for an egg to be laid. While males are generally more aggressive, larger, and louder in courtship, behavioral cues can be misleading.

Reliable Methods

  • DNA Sexing: The only guaranteed method, usually done via a blood test or feather sample, according to Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions.
  • Laying an Egg: Only females can lay eggs. If you have two birds that both lay eggs, they are both females.

Behavioral Observations (Often Correct, Not Guaranteed)

  • Courtship Display: The male usually chases the female, bows, struts, coos loudly, and drags his tail on the ground.
  • Mounting: The male mounts the female to mate. Note: In the absence of a male, two females may form a same-sex pair, where one acts as the male and mounts the other.
  • Mirror Test: When presented with a mirror, males are more likely to fight or court their reflection, while females may ignore it or behave differently.
