Team Gurnay –
Happy upcoming Holidays,
Now that we are coming to the very important breeding season, I thought I would share
some of the traits you might consider focusing on as you mate up your wonderful Gurnays.
Appearance, or, racing performance or breeders of birds you like in the Gurnay strain.
Most of us have not flown our Gurnays as consistently as we would like, so let's focus on
the best fliers that really look good.
Gurnay type heads – round, smaller beak but proportionate to the head. Not the long snipe
heads and beaks you see in most pigeons today. You want birds that look like the Gurnays
of Fred Shaw, and later Tom Smith and most recently Dr. John Kazmierczak.
The neck – shorter and thicker than most.
Feathers – soft to the touch like handling silk, smooth but strong, no weakness in the
feathers that can be attributed to genetics such as turned-out flights, frills etc.
Gurnay liked black skinned youngsters - feet and all. The legs and feet will redden as the
youngsters mature.
He liked short legs but be mindful that Gurnay liked larger legs and feet. Personally, I don't
like to cut the bands off my birds because their legs have gotten too big for the band. (Plus
remember they don't fly with their feet. Just my opinion)
Body – needs to be packed with muscle and energy. I like an ovate body likened to a Viking
ship, strong keel, a flatter attachment for the muscle to the bone. A body that fits in your
hand, the kind you don't want to put down.
It can be a little longer cast but not out of balance where there is too much body and not
enough tail to counterbalance the chest. The balance has to be there.
Another thought, most of you know the predators have a list of your favorites so when you
find the one that meets your criteria do yourself a favor DON’T FLY IT. Let it prove itself
in the breeding loft, because as soon as you start training that bird, the predators will take it.
Let it prove itself in the breeding loft then if it doesn't produce then you can put it on the
race team. Test everything.
Enough for now!
Yours in Sport,

Pam please tell Donnie these Hansennes do indeed have a lot of class. Large wings like I've never seen like maybe on a duck or owl. They have a lovely prance, and their Roman noses takes the cake. Love it! Keep up the good breeding Donnie.
Dear Don,
Just sending a gift for my appreciation for getting such nice Sion birds from you. When I get some youngsters from them, I will send you some photos. I am still planning on purchase another hen and cock. Have a good breeding season with your birds.
Received birds this morning here in Missouri. They are safe and both beautiful.
Beautiful female pigeon. Lovely mix of colors, fether quality and great posture. I figured her picture wasn't the best pose. The male is impressive and very masculine looking and I'm happy to say they are calm and get along very well together. Thanks again they are gorgeous....
The birds arrived today got them all tucked in the loft. You saved the best for last I think there nice birds ,,only sorry I didn't buy a couple of the other hens. Thanks alot
Hello. I received the birds today they look great. Thank you very much.
The Hen is here! Awesome bird & I can feel the power just holding her. She is very calm pigeon & that is always a plus. Thanks so much!
Hi this is Nate from Wisconsin. I just wanted to let you know the Andalusian cockbird made it here in good shape today. Thanks again!
Hi Don, birds are adapting well. I like their presentaion & calmness. Looks like they will fit in with my birds. I see what you mean about the BB. We'll see how he produces. Might b a genetic thing & go away when crossed with and unrelated hen.
Regards
Jim
